Two headed drum with rope tensioning and releasable gut snares, modelled after the folk instruments from southern France. The tambour provençal drum has a small shell and makes a similar dull sound to a tenor drum. Predominantly used in French repertoire - with and without snares (Bizet, Milhaud). The drum heads are tensioned in the traditional manner using hemp ropes with movable leather ears (tensioning devices).
